Superb marquetry inlaid bureau made by PJ Walsh & Sons, Dublin c, 1870
This firm probably originated with P. J. Walsh, an upholsterer listed at 71 Great Brunswick Street in 1860. Subsequently Walsh, P. Jas & Co were listed at 19 and 20 Bachelor’s Walk, 1862-69, becoming P. J. Walsh & Sons 1869-1922.
In 1920 they were also listed at 13 & 14 Liffey Street. This firm were both furniture makers and dealers; the 1st Earl of Iveagh was a client, among others. Their trade label occurs on a mahogany pedestal desk at Kenwood House: ‘Large Stocks of First-Class Modern & Genuine Antique Furniture. Antique Furniture Restored or Purchased. Valuations and Funerals Particularly Attended To & Conducted with Respectability & Economy’.
